Question:

Spring is just around the corner and I would like to avoid over-the-counter medications for my seasonal allergies this year. Are there any natural remedies you can recommend?

Answer:

Yes there are many natural remedies for dealing with seasonal allergies. Many are natural anti-histamines or support the immune system.

It is thought that allergies develop due to an overactive immune system and/or a 'confused' immune system. When our bodies become overburdened and gut microbiome unbalanced, an insufficiently 'trained' immune system may start attacking substances that should not normally elicit an immune response. Therefore, addressing digestive function is beneficial for all types of allergies.

For dealing with seasonal allergies you can try one or a combination of the following remedies:

  • Butterbur
  • Quercetin
  • Grape Seed Extract
  • Onions have natural anti-histamine properties - enjoy liberally!

Tips for improving digestion:

  • Chew your food
  • Eat mindfully
  • Deep breathing before meals (to help activate the parasympathetic nervous system)
  • Take 1 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar 15 mins before meals
  • Eat fermented foods and eat a wide variety of whole, plant foods
  • Increase fibre and omega-3
  • Drink plenty of water (between meals)
  • Find out what your food allergies and/or sensitivities are (via blood test)

Additional options for addressing allergies include:
  • Decreasing man-made chemicals - eat organic, switch to natural personal care products and household cleaning products, make-up, etc
  • Reduce consumption of inflammatory foods like dairy, processed carbohydrates, fried foods, and sugar
  • Eat more leafy greens
  • Practice deep breathing, especially when experiencing stress
